You are in a band. You want a recording that faithfully represents that band. You don’t want to be forced to record each instrument separately to a click track to later be sampled and quantized, resulting in a recording that sounds like it came off a production line. You don’t want to be pushed around by a producer who insists on deconstructing your band and rebuilding it to conform to his tastes, while you watch on uncomfortably. I won’t do that. Instead we will focus on the human element that makes your band unique, use good mic techniques to harness the natural acoustics of beautiful sonic environments, and create a recording that captures the raw energy and immediacy of your band as an ensemble unit, the way bands should be. Together we will embrace the character, personality and spirit of your band to make a recording that is uniquely, wonderfully, yours.
“There’s a lot riding on the way the drums sound on a record”
– Steve Albini
James Gasson is a multi-instrumentalist recording & mix engineer from Brighton. He spent his youth playing in bands, hitting drums too hard, and gigging around obscure parts of Eastern Europe. After interning in Chicago for noted studio grump Steve Albini, James carried out audio services for the BBC, The University of Sussex, various studios and media companies, before building his own recording studio in Brighton. He makes music under the name Cat Fire Radio, draws cartoons which get posted to his website, and he has never been to Switzerland.
