Mixing &
Mastering

Fix
your
mix.

Mixing

Every mix is different; some come together fast, others take a few rounds to settle. I don’t follow a one-size-fits-all template. Instead, I work with you to get the song where it needs to go, without nuking it with an arsenal of plugins.

Mixing can take anywhere between 2–6 hours per song, with several passes, incrementally zooming out from individual instruments to the bigger picture. If it looks like it’ll take longer, because we’re editing drums or untangling a difficult session, I’ll always check in with you before running up the hours.

You’ll have the opportunity to hear the mix in context and get time to sit with it before signing off. Collaboration is welcome. Nitpicking is fine. Losing perspective is normal – I’ll help with that too.

Mastering

I’m not a mastering engineer in the traditional sense; I don’t have racks of boutique gear or a team of interns making coffee. But I’ve mastered a lot of music, and if I’ve worked on your project from the start, or if you need help giving your mix that final lift, I’m very happy to step in.

My mastering style is subtle and sympathetic. I won’t crush your dynamics or “warm up” your mix unless there’s a reason to. I don’t believe louder always equals better, and I won’t mess with your mix just to prove I’ve done something.

That said, if your mix is out of control, I can usually make a big improvement with a light touch. Believe my ears.

How to make your music sound great

A great mix begins at the recording stage. This means ensuring that sufficient attention has been paid to the quality of the instrument, the standard of the performance, the combination of tones, and the overall detail of the recording, factors that are integral to any recording session I do. Remember, a lot of work can make a bad recording sound okay. Minimal work can make a great recording sound amazing! When you’ve reached a stage where you don’t know which way is up and which way is down, what you need is an objective pair of ears. It is possible to significantly improve most out-of-control mixes by employing any number of techniques, whether it’s just a light dusting down, or a complete rebuild, I can help you get back on track with your mix and alleviate the stress you’ve been suffering during those 4am hair-pulling sessions. And best of all, we can work any number of ways, including remotely, here at the studio, or even at your place on your own setup. Similarly, allowing an objective pair of ears to scrutinise your mixes through the process of mastering can pay dividends. Through careful attention to detail, safely ensuring that the material is not crushed or mangled, but instead enhanced by respecting the original sound and production ethos, it’s possible to go further than you might imagine to push it up a level and help it sound its very best.
